ASUMH Performing Arts Council presents the 2012-2013 Season
|
The Capitol Steps Friday, August 24, 2012
|
|
|

Kick off election season with the funniest political comedy in the nation at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home on Friday, August 24. The Capitol Steps formed 30 years ago to create musical parodies and skits that convey a special brand of satirical humor. They are a group who set out to ridicule the very people and places that employed them; a group who puts the “mock” in democracy. The Capitol Steps will perform at The Vada Sheid Community Development Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 24 as the Performing Arts Series (PAS) season opener.
The Capitol Steps have performed for five U.S. presidents, and in all 50 states. The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program. The Capitol Steps, who have recorded 32 albums, can be heard on National Public Radio stations nationwide.
Based in Washington, D.C., the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices, and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Most cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans. No matter who holds the office, there’s never a shortage of material, which is updated constantly. Current examples of the trending topics include songs about Mitt Romney’s plea to the GOP (“Help Me Fake It to the Right”) and President Obama’s class warfare (“If I Tax a Rich Man”). The Capitol Steps tackle both sides of the political spectrum.
The Capitol Steps is one of four shows presented as part of this year’s ASUMH Performing Arts Series at The Vada Sheid Community Development Center on the ASUMH campus. See all PAS shows for $100, or $35 per show (plus fees). Student discounts are available at half price (plus fees). For more information about the full season of the ASUMH Performing Arts Series, call 870-508-6280 or visit www.thesheid.com.

Classical theatre production of Shakespeare by Tony Award winning group The Acting Company!
All the world’s a stage… One of Shakespeare’s most frequently quoted passages from one of his most popular fairy tales—a world possible only on a stage. As You Like It is a metaphor of love; its power, madness, danger, humor and reflection. On one level it is a diverting amusement. On a deeper level, it is a journey of discovery, in which the characters gain knowledge of themselves and the world. When Rosalind and Orlando fall in love, they are unable to act on their feelings. Forced to flee for their lives into the Forest of Arden, they find themselves entangled in a beguiling game of love, lust, and mistaken identity in one of Shakespeare’s great comedies. Will the forest heal the family feud?

Friday, November 9, 2012 LaDonna Gatlin
Motivational speaker, singer and sister of the Gatlin Brothers.
LaDonna literally grew up on stage singing with her brothers–the legendary Gatlin Brothers. In the early 1970’s the Gatlins took their family harmony to Nashville. But a detour appeared on the road to stardom… LaDonna got married. At this defining moment, she realized that success for her could be measured in a different way. So she took a giant leap of faith, chose to follow her heart, and “sing a different song” apart from her brothers. She has spent her entire career empowering people to “sing their own song” as well… from the inside out… through their words, their deeds, and their actions.
A seasoned professional, LaDonna has shared her message everywhere. She truly speaks from the heart with stories that are the stuff of life, driving home common sense wisdom for everyday living in the process. LaDonna is uniquely gifted to speak and sing her message straight into your heart. Her presentations educate, inspire and entertain and are an unforgettable experience for her audiences! LaDonna is an active member of the National Speakers Association, and has earned its highest professional designation, the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP). In July of 2005, LaDonna was one of five speakers (and the only woman!) inducted into the Speakers Hall of Fame (CPAE Council of Peers Award for Excellence), a lifetime award for speaking excellence and professionalism. She’s recorded four solo CD’s and is a contributing writer to the best-selling book series Chicken Soup for the Soul.
